Why Men Ignore Pain Until It's Too Late (And What It Costs Them)

A Men's Health Month Conversation About the Real Consequences of Waiting

The "Walk It Off" Problem

Men are significantly less likely than women to seek medical care for pain, illness, or injury. According to a widely cited Cleveland Clinic survey, 72% of men would rather do household chores than go to the doctor — and 65% said they avoid seeking medical attention for as long as possible.

When it comes to musculoskeletal pain — back pain, shoulder pain, knee problems, hip tightness — that reluctance becomes especially costly. Because the body doesn't just wait for you to decide you're ready to deal with it. Dysfunction compounds. Compensations build. What starts as a minor issue becomes a major one.

June is Men's Health Month, and at Movement Driven in Jacksonville and St. Johns, FL, we think it's worth having an honest conversation about what we see in our clinic every week.

What Happens When You Wait

Pain rarely stays the same when you ignore it. More commonly, it evolves:

  • Acute injuries (a strain, a minor tear, a repetitive stress issue) become chronic conditions.
  • Surrounding muscles compensate for the area that's hurting, creating new patterns of dysfunction.
  • Range of motion decreases, making normal activities harder and putting more strain on joints.
  • The window for conservative, non-surgical treatment narrows.

We regularly see patients at Movement Driven who describe months or years of manageable discomfort — until the day it became unmanageable. At that point, the options are often more invasive, more expensive, and require longer recovery.

The most common areas where men delay care include low back pain (the #1 cause of disability worldwide), shoulder impingement and rotator cuff issues, knee pain related to running, squatting, or sport, hip tightness that progresses to labral tears, and elbow and wrist pain from work or athletics.

The Cost of Delayed Treatment

Beyond the physical consequences, delaying treatment carries a real financial cost. Minor issues managed early with physical therapy are often resolved in 4–8 sessions. Chronic conditions requiring extended care can take 12–24+ sessions with longer timelines. Surgical intervention can cost $10,000–$50,000 or more, plus weeks or months of post-surgical rehab.

Physical therapy is one of the most cost-effective treatments available for musculoskeletal conditions — and it works best when started early. The CDC's chronic pain data confirms that over 51 million U.S. adults experience chronic pain — a number that reflects, in large part, conditions that were never adequately addressed at their source.

At Movement Driven, the first evaluation is just $79. There is no referral required to start care in Florida.
